Reading a savings account rate the way a banker does
Variable yields, qualifying balances and transfer windows decide what you actually earn on cash.
Variable means variable
A savings yield can be changed at any time without notice in most agreements. Treat a leading rate as a snapshot rather than a commitment, and re-check the accounts you hold at least twice a year.
Check what the rate applies to
Tiered accounts sometimes pay the advertised rate only on a portion of the balance, or only when a direct deposit or minimum-activity condition is met. The effective yield on your whole balance is the number that matters.
Access is part of the return
If this is emergency money, ask how long an outbound transfer takes and whether there are monthly withdrawal limits. A slightly lower yield with same-day access can be the better account.
